Punta Cana makes TripAdvisor Top 10 Beach List:

The Dominican Republic's Punta Cana beach has made the top beach spot list of TripAdvisor, known as the world's largest travel site.  On April, 5th TripAdvisor announced the winners of its 2011 Travelers' Choice® Beaches awards.  Five beaches in the Caribbean made the top list.

 

Award winners were determined based on the most highly rated beach destinations by travelers in TripAdvisor reviews.  TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice winners are based on millions of real and unbiased reviews and opinions from travelers around the world.  In addition to the outstanding beaches, these destinations also feature top-rated options for hotels, vacation rentals, attractions, and restaurants.

Travelocity names Top 10 Family Destinations for Summer 2011:

The Dominican Republic was included in Travelocity's list of Top Ten Summer Family Destinations released on May 13th to coincide with Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer travel in the US.  The website says the preference is for families to travel to beach destinations in the US and the Caribbean.  The DR is listed in 10th place.

 

Travelocity says on the Dominican Republic: "Rounding out the top 10 most popular summer destinations for families is the Dominican Republic and it's no wonder.  There are many direct flights to Dominican Republic every day, so towing the kiddies and all their stuff is no problem.  Plus, Dominican Republic resorts come in every shape, size and price range," reports the website.  The DR is listed as with an average daily rate: US $161.

 

 

 

Travel to the DR up through May:

Travel to the Dominican Republic for the first 5 months of the year is up 4.44% compared to last year. Some 1,932,564 non-resident travelers arrived during that period, according to the Central Bank. The Central Bank says that the increase is primarily due to an increase in arrivals of non-resident foreigners, up 5.09%.  Total arrivals for the period were 2,115,006 which is a 4.43% increase compared to the same period last year.

 

Canadians Love the DR:

The Dominican Republic is the 3rd preferred destination for Canadians traveling to the Americas. According to Statistics Canada figures for 2009, the most recent year for which data is available, the neighboring US continues to be the top destination for outward-bound Canadians with about 18 million overnight trips, followed by Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Britain, France, Italy and Germany.

 

Outbound travel by Canadians is up, coinciding with the reality that now 60% of Canadians have passports, compared to 36% in March 2005. Canadians are making 13.2% more trips to overseas destinations in the winter season compared to the previous year, as reported in Canwest News Service.

Punta Cana is #1 Airport in the DR:

Punta Cana continues to be the leading airport for tourist arrivals to the Dominican Republic. Indeed 61.73% of all tourists that visited the Dominican Republic arrived by the east coast airport. Some 1,055,874 tourists used the PUJ airport.

 

Las Americas (SDQ), the leading airport serving Santo Domingo, received 318,775 passengers, for 18.64% of total tourist arrivals.  Next was Puerto Plata with 184,952 tourists for 10.81% followed by La Romana, with 3.64%.

 

 

Apple Vacations adds Michigan to Punta Cana Flight:

Apple Vacations has added weekly non-stop flights to Punta Cana from Lansing Capital Regional International Airport in Michigan starting December 23rd, 2011. The seasonal flight will end April 6th, 2012. The Friday morning flights are on Sun Country Airlines.

 

Gol to Increase Flights to Punta Cana:

Gol, the largest low-fare and low-cost airline in Latin America, is adding two more frequencies to its three-times a week flight using the Varig brand from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil via Caracas, Venezuela to Punta Cana for the summer.  The Punta Cana resort market is becoming increasingly popular with Brazilians.  So far, 22,435 Brazilians visited in the first four months of the year, up 125% compared to 2010.  Passenger demand both from Brazil as from Venezuela has kept strong for this route leading to the increase in service.

 

 

AirTran Flies to Punta Cana:

Low-cost carrier AirTran Airways has begun flights from Atlanta, Georgia to Punta Cana.  The daily flights to Punta Cana leave Atlanta at 10:20 am and arrive in Punta Cana at 2:55 pm.  The return flights depart Punta Cana at 4:15 pm and arrive in Atlanta at 7:20 pm.  The flight times allow for multiple connections.  Punta Cana is the airline's sixth Caribbean destination.

 

Southwest Airlines is negotiating for the purchase of AirTran, which would create the most expansive network of any low-cost carrier in the US.  The deal is expected to give Southwest its first flights outside the continental US by continuing AirTran's service to Mexico and the Caribbean, as reported earlier in the US press

 

JetBlue's New La Romana Flight:

Deputy Minister of Tourism Magaly Toribio has highlighted the importance of the new JetBlue flight from New York's JFK International into La Romana Casa de Campo International Airport starting November 16th.  JetBlue is the largest carrier in the Dominican Republic and this is its latest announcement of a flight.  The Wednesday and Saturday flights depart at 8:36 am, arriving LRM at 1:31 pm.  They depart LRM at 2:26 pm, arriving JFK at 5:26 pm.  In the Dominican Republic, JetBlue also serves Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, and Santiago with services to New York, Boston, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando and San Juan.
