In 2008, the Dominican Republic's Gross Domestic Product was up 5.3%, compared to 4.6% average for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the world average of 3.4%. Inflation ended at 4.52% (the lowest in Latin America), when forecasts were for 12%. Foreign investment totaled a record US $2.88 Billion, balancing the effects of increases in fuel, raw materials and inputs. The Punta Cana International Airport receives over 50% of all travelers into the country while Bavaro Beach Punta Cana enjoys the highest occupancy rates in the country at 77.7% vs. the national average of 70.6%.

In August, President Leonel Fernandez said during a cabinet meeting that growth during the first half of 2009 reached 1.4% and predicts a 2.5% - 3.0% growth rate during the second half of the year.   Foreign investment in the DR was US $1.0 Billion in 2007, US $2.0 Billion in 2008, and is expected to increase to US $2.4 Billion in 2009. This investment will be used with a focus on sustained growth in the Tourism industry and revamped Free Zone policies to stimulate economic growth. As of December 31, 2008, there were 340,322 Internet lines in the DR, which is a 28.8% increase over 2007 and high speed DSL is available in all tourist hubs including Bavaro Punta Cana.

Though tourism is still down slightly so far in 2009, the negative trend returned to growth starting in May. Canadians continue to travel to the Dominican Republic in record numbers. Cruise Passenger Arrivals increased 15.5% thru April 2009.

Due to an increase in patrols and with the collaboration of the communities that live within the tourist zones, the Director of Touristic Police has announced that “there is zero crime in the country’s tourist zones.” Punta Cana is the largest tourist zone in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic continues to attract significant investments in energy projects. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expected to break ground in September 2009 on both a Natural Gas Plant that would generate 600 Mw of energy and a Wind Power Project that would generate an additional 600 Mw of energy.   These 2 projects involve a Euro $500 Million investment. The UAE is also considering signing on for a second Natural Gas Plant that would also produce 600 Mw of energy and involve an investment of an additional Euro $700 Million.

The InterAmerican Development Bank has offered the DR government US $100 Million in loans to promote educational programs in the country.

After a 26 year absence, Carlos Santana returned to the 5,000 seat open-air amphitheater at Altos de Chavon in La Romana to play a headlining concert on March 7, 2009.   Santana and Frank Sinatra played the inaugural concerts in 1982.
